Each set of exercises is followed by a short recovery period, during which your heart rate should drop to 40 or 50 percent of your maximal heart rate.   2. Pedal as fast as you can for 30 seconds.
  3. Spend the next 60 seconds pedaling at the pace you used during your warmup.
  4. Pedal as fast as you can for 30 seconds, then reduce intensity for 60 seconds again. Repeat these steps, gradually building up to a session that lasts 15 minutes or longer.

HIIT is an effective form of exercise for many people, but there are some people who should check with their doctors before participating in high intensity workouts. If you have a heart condition, diabetes, high blood pressure, joint problems or any other chronic health condition, it’s important to discuss your fitness plans with your doctor before beginning any type of exercise program.

The American College of Sports Training recommends establishing a base level of fitness by exercising 3 to 5 times a week for 20 to 60 minutes at a time before beginning HIIT workouts.
